Inför konserten tog VBDFR-Sanna ett snack med Haze om medeltiden, festivaler vs. klubbspelningar, hennes naturbegåvning gällande juridik och vad som egentligen hänt efter att hon lackade på sitt skivbolag och läckte sitt debutalbum.
När jag pratar med Angel Haze sitter hon på ett hotellrum i London redo att senare på kvällen spela på Wireless-festivalen. Hon låter lite trött, men blir genast exalterad när jag frågar om hennes förväntningar på Stockholms-spelningen.
– Det blir mitt första besök i Stockholm. Framförallt är jag exalterad över att träffa mina svenska fans i deras egen miljö, men förutom det är jag väldigt exalterad över Gamla Stan. Jag har hört så mycket om Gamla Stan, jag är lite besatt av slott och av medeltiden och vi har ju inget liknande i USA så det ska bli coolt att få se den miljön.
Finns det någon svensk musik du gillar?
– Jag älskar Lykke Li, men det säger ju alla. Och så gillar jag verkligen Max Martin, han är en av de mest begåvade producenterna. Det roliga är att jag faktiskt precis börjat jobba med de bägge.
Oj! När får vi höra resultatet av de samarbetena?
– Jag kan inte svara på det exakt, men snart hoppas jag!
Förutom kvällens spelning i Stockholm gör Angel Haze ytterligare ett Sverigebesök i sommar, i augusti spelar hon på Solid Sound-festivalen i Uddevalla. Jag frågar vilken typ av spelningar hon gillar bäst, klubbspelningar eller festivalspelningar. Svaret kommer snabbt.
– Festivaler, helt klart. Det är så bra vibe på festivaler, alla är där för musiken, det är något större liksom. Men klubbspelningar kan också vara roliga, det kan bli väldigt intimt och personligt.
Det har gått ungefär ett halvår sedan du läckte ditt debutalbum Dirty Gold, tänker du någonsin på hur livet hade sett ut om du inte gjort det?
– Jag försöker att inte göra det. Det var ett beslut jag fattade, och det har lett till massa olika saker. Jag försöker att inte ångra mig. Nu har jag börjat jobba på nya projekt också, saker som låter lite annorlunda. Jag försöker sjunga mer till exempel. Det är naturligt för mig att försöka testa nya grejer, att utvecklas, plus att jag ju aldrig riktigt sett mig själv som en rappare. Jag ser mig mer som en artist, och som artist vill jag utvecklas och testa nya grejer.
Några dagar innan jag pratar med Angel Haze gick BET Awards av stapeln. Angel Haze var nominerad för bästa kvinnliga hiphop-artist, ett pris som gick till Nicki Minaj, som höll ett uppmärksammat tacktal där hon påpekade att hon alltid skriver sina egna texter. Många tolkade Nickis tal som riktat till Iggy Azalea, som även hon var nominerad i samma kategori. Jag frågar Angel Haze om hon sett tacktalet.
– Nej, jag har missat det helt. Jag spelade på Glastonbury då. Men jag kan säga att jag blev förvånad över att jag var nominerad, glad såklart men också lite förvirrad. Det är sånna grejer som kan kännas konstiga eftersom jag verkligen inte ser mig själv som rappare.
Vad skulle du vilja göra om du inte var musiker?
– Om jag inte hade varit musiker hade jag nog fortfarande pluggat på college. Jag läste medicin och biologi och hade som mål att bli neurokirurg.
Är det något du skulle vilja ta upp igen i framtiden?
– Nej, det känns som det är för sent då. Men om jag skulle börja på college igen skulle jag nog läsa juridik. Jag har en jurist som hela tiden säger till mig att jag borde satsa på en karriär inom det, att hon skulle anställa mig direkt efter examen. Hon verkar tycka att jag är en naturbegåvning, haha.
Vad har du annars för planer för framtiden?
– Jag jobbar på ny musik hela tiden, men på senaste tiden har jag också börjat hålla på mer med välgörenhet. Jag är engagerad i olika organisationer som arbetar med utsatta barn, hemlösa barn och barn som utsätts för misshandel.
Varför blev det just de frågorna som fångade ditt engagemang?
– Det finns en gräns för hur mycket du kan göra med musik. Tidigare använde jag min musik mycket för att prata om de frågorna som är viktiga för mig utifrån mina erfarenheter. Men de senaste åren har min musik gått bortom den smärtan och mer börjat handla om det positiva i mitt liv. Att jobba med välgörenhet är ett sätt för mig att behålla mitt budskap. Det känns väldigt bra att kunna göra gott, att kunna hålla ett barn i handen som kanske går igenom vad jag gått igenom och kunna säga att det blir bättre. Det betyder jättemycket för mig.
