James went hands on with this model in 2017 and found the same restraint in IWC’s design decisions that I see in the 2021 Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG,” saying that ”Automotive-themed watch designs walk a very fine line, and it’s common to see the automotive aspect conflict with the normal goals of a legible watch design. With the AMG 50th Ingenieur, I feel that IWC did a good job of ensuring that the design still functioned as a watch and that the automotive link tie-in was subtle”
For a mechanical watch in titanium, that’s a pretty solid value. The Timex Marlin, the brand’s most popular mechanical offering, retails for $249, so for a $100 premium, you’re getting into the world of titanium cases – link with a sapphire crystal, too. And of course, there’s some clout in having a limited-edition collab watch, if you believe in that sort of thing (and many consumers do, just look at the streetwear industry).
The escapement is a lever escapement, but with some modifications – specifically, the safety roller (a sort of metal hub that fits over the balance staff itself, like a wheel on an axle, and which prevents the lever from unlocking if the watch takes a hit) and guard pin link (which interacts with the safety roller) have been omitted, which allows the escapement assembly to be thinner.
Beyond the color choices, there’s not much else to add link – read James’ full review for a full take on the fit and finish, those controversial 5 stars at 6 o’clock, and what he calls a ”confident crown.”
The name Type XX, link on the other hand, solely refers to civilian-grade versions of the Type 20 design language; those include 99 percent of the watches that Breguet has produced under its pilots’ chronograph banner since it was brought back in 1995.
