Fokus ligger framför allt på flerspelarläget – men det går att spela ensam. Här finns ingen berättelse, ingen början och inget slut. Det handlar bara om att lära sig bemästra kontrollen. Och att hålla sig levande så länge som möjligt. Du hoppar på väggar, slajsar bambu, slår tillbaka pistolkulor med svärd och ser pixligt samurajblod spruta över hela skärmen.
Det är så sjukt bra.
Spelet är en liten pärla som byggts i Game Maker Studio, ett spelutvecklarverktyg för alla med mer ambitioner än programmerarskills. Det är på många sätt också ett primitivt verktyg, men har samtidigt legat till grund för ett par riktigt fina indieupplevelser de senaste åren. Beau Blyth är den ganska beskedliga mannen bakom företaget Teknopants. Och Teknopants har inte gjort något större väsen av sig tidigare. I och med Samurai Gunn har det faktumet förändrats.
Men Steam-versionen av Samurai Gunn är långt ifrån ett färdigt spel. Det saknas möjligheter att spela mot andra online och det är absolut inte buggfritt. Kontentan av det hela är att här finns ett välutvecklat embryo till något fantastiskt, men det är inte riktigt färdigt. Och den mest troliga anledningen till det är att Teknopants för tillfället sliter stenhårt för att få ut spelet till Playstation 4 och Playstation Vita. Där lär också många av felen ha rättats till. Online-multiplayer lär också vara en del. Eftersom PS4:an spelar in allt som händer på skärmen lär du aldrig behöva sörja över att dina vänner inte ska kunna se allt det där grymma du lyckats med.
Men det är ändå ett spel som måste rekommenderas. Särskilt om ni är fyra personer som kan samlas runt en datorskärm. För den som letar efter spelreferenser skulle kanske Smash Bros. ligga bäst till.
Musiken kräver en extraparagraf också. Doseone (Anticon, du vet?) ligger bakom ett (mar)drömskt soundtrack med lika delar Kurosawa-atmosfär och post-Wu-tang-shaolin-pepp. Det hela känns som en lågbudgetversion av vad RZA gjorde för Afro Samurai-serien. Jag skulle sträcka mig så långt som att säga att det här är det bästa soundtracket sedan Hotline Miami (som ju för övrigt också gjordes i Game Maker). Och funkar lika bra som subtil ljudmatta bakom spelet som i lurarna på vinterpromenad. Titelspåret är en helt underbar blandning av traditionella samurajljud (du vet) och vokaler som låter typ lika onda och mörka som Zebra Katz gör på DRKLNG-mixtapet.
Jag längtar tills det blir riktiga onlineturneringar i det här spelet. Tills det har hänt kan vi nöja oss med att se det här klippet från finalmatchen i Fantastic Arcade 2012-turneringen.
