Jag vet inte riktigt hur jag ska skriva om det här. I dag nådde nyheten om att The Last Mr Bigg, eller som han egentligen heter Donald Maurice Pears, gått bort. Jag såg det via andra Alabama-rappares sociala medier. AL.com rapporterar att han dog i sömnen natten till onsdag. Efter att 11 år tidigare ha överlevt två skott i huvudet.
Det var 2004 och den gången dog han inte. Han vaknade efter åtta dagar i koma med ena ögat och delar av hjärnan borta. Ögat ersatte han med ett diamantprytt glasöga och hjärnan vet jag inte hur han ersatte. Han lyckades hursomhelst komma tillbaka och nådde kanske sina största framgångar när han samarbetade med grammy-vinnarna 36 Mafia (och ryktades bli en del av gruppen?) under några år i mitten av 00-talet.
Det var ungefär samtidigt som jag upptäckte honom, dock inte via 36 Mafia för precis som de flesta andra missade jag helt att han jobbade i Memphis. Jag och många andra hade precis börjat upptäcka hur mycket otroligt fantastisk musik som släppts i södern som mer eller mindre inte spridits alls. Detta var när UGK för de flesta bara var gruppen som gjort en låt med Jay-Z och Pimp C satt inlåst. T.I. började precis höras. Texas och Houston hade sitt stora år 2005. Vi började kunna höra musik från södern på radio och ZTV osv, men det var samtida musik. Musik som visade tecken och hintade om att det byggde på ett arv vi inte hört, ett arv som inte gick att nå.
Det känns nästan konstigt att skriva idag, men det var inte helt lätt att få tag på all musik för tio år sen. Jag hade hört talas om Lil Boosie och Gucci Mane men det gick inte att hitta nån musik på internet (eller i Sthlms skivbutiker för den delen). Sakta men säkert började DJ Screw-tape efter DJ Screw-tape, UGK-platta efter UGK-platta, Z-Ro-skiva efter Z-Ro-skiva dyka upp på olika obskyra bloggar. Några av oss ville gräva djupare. Det fanns massa olika saker att fastna för. För mig var en av de viktigaste det vemodiga berättande som jag tyckte dök upp lite här och var, det var de guldkornen jag letade efter. Och min poäng med hela den här internet-grejen, den här musiken vi känner så väl idag genom Boosie, alla har hört Z-Ro, alla har kännt i hela kroppen vad Kevin Gates känner när han skriver sina sånger: denna musik från amerikanska södern var inte tillgänglig för 10 år sen. Södern-smärta influerade av Tupac. Vi letade för vi behövde höra det.
Så vi hittade Trial Time.
När jag upptäckte en artist som The Last Mr Bigg behövde jag höra mer. Och det fick jag, över de kommande åren lyckades jag hämta hem fysiska greppbara mp3s till inte mindre än fyra skivor. Jag skrev om en på en av mina 10-20 gamla pinsamma bloggar (vem har haft ensiffrigt antal bloggar? orimligt beteende). Skivorna snurrade typ lika många varv i bilstereon som jag snurrade varv runt bergslagsvägens 100 rondeller. Och hans röst fick mig att känna allt. Hans berättande var rakt och ärligt, han beskrev och han sa vad han sa utan att krångla till det. Han var en av de berättarna som kunde hålla ens intresse uppe utan att behöva vara alltför kreativ i vilken vinkel han ville använda. Han behövde inte säga att hans CD var en tavla eller snap eller fruktstund eller långfilm eller allt vad man hör nu för tiden, för han hade saker att berätta.
Har skrivit mer än nog om hur jag upplevde musiken, ni får gärna hedra The Last Mr Bigg genom att lyssna själva. Och självklart ska ni böra med Trial Time:

Efter att ha hört Trial Time har ni hört ungefär lika mycket av The Last Mr Biggs katalog som de flesta andra som någonsin hört hans röst. Det är alltså en sån sång jag har sett och hört folk fortsätta prata om som en kultklassiker i dunkla hörn av internet och västerort i snart tio år. Och alla har ju hört Mr Biggs röst som refräng-sångare på 36 Mafia-dängan Poppin My Collar (och en drös andra 36 Mafia/Project Pat–sånger), vare sig ni visste om det eller inte. Han brukar inte stå med i gästlistan och han syns knappt i videon.
Som ni förståt gillade jag honom som bäst när han berättade saker för mig. T ex på Traffic King från albumet Only If You Knew. Den är en jävla TV-serie, exakt denna: pilotavsnittet av True Detective. Det är den känslan.
Eller titelspåret från samma skiva.
